After my first yoga class, I was hooked. I felt so calm. My body felt so open, and so tall. For more than 25 years now I have attended yoga classes for fitness, fun and to find a place of peace and respite. It’s helped me through bouts of back, neck, and wrist pain when I worked in IT. Yoga kept me fit during pregnancy and gives me a calming place to go when I need a break from the constancy of motherhood.
After many years working in a 24/7, high-stress career and suffering multiple miscarriages, I decided to focus on my health and well-being. I left work and trained with Los Angeles-based YogaWorks to become a certified yoga teacher. In 2013, I earned my Yoga Alliance 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification. I also have specialist training in Pelvic Floor Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Yoga.
In addition to practising Yoga, I regularly practise Pilates. I find many yoga classes are lacking when it comes to protecting and strengthening the body through core engagement. My Pelvic Floor Yoga training and my practice of Pilates greatly inform the way that I teach Yoga.
As someone who lives with hypermobility, I know the pain and frustration of many injuries, and at times, terrible whole body pain and stiffness. Additionally, having lived with Long Covid for 3 years, I can also relate to feeling held back by my body and having to adapt to a new normal in order to move toward healing. Thanks to yoga and other healthy habits, I am far stronger now in my 40's than I ever was in my 20's. The Long Covid is more manageable and I rarely experience pain from hypermobility.
Please know, it is a myth that you must be flexible to do yoga. We do not arrive to Yoga with perfect bodies. Through breath and mindful movement we move our bodies and our minds toward wholeness and healing, and we learn to accept ourselves as we are each day.
